Center for Hospice Care/Hospice Foundation in Mishawaka, IN and the Palliative Care Association of Uganda in Kampala, Uganda
Center for Hospice Care was linked with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda in 2008. The partnership is multi-faceted and has engaged in numerous projects and areas of support to enhance palliative care in Uganda.
This has been accomplished by work on many fronts, with many collaborators. The number of nurses and clinical officers who are able to prescribe morphine in rural districts has increased because of the partnership’s support of the Diploma in Clinical Palliative Care program at Hospice Africa Uganda. Many partners, including the University of Notre Dame and the Uganda Ministry of Health have collaborated on an mHealth project, which strengthens palliative care surveillance – including monitoring morphine supplies – throughout the country. The partnership has produced two documentaries to raise awareness about the need for palliative care in low-resource settings and the plight of orphaned child caregivers.
